Bundestag Debates Climate Tipping Point in Coral Reefs

The release of the Global Tipping Points Report 2025 has prompted a parliamentary discussion in the German Bundestag. The report highlights that, at the current 1.4°C of global warming, warm-water coral reefs have already begun crossing their thermal tipping points and are undergoing widespread dieback. In light of these findings, the parliamentary group Bündnis 90/Die Grünen requested a Current Hour debate titled First Climate Tipping Point Surpassed According to International Study – Consequences for the Federal Government’s Action.”

Across most parliamentary groups, as well as from the Parliamentary State Secretary for the Environment, there was broad acknowledgment that the accumulating evidence and observations presented in the report should guide stronger policy measures aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and safeguarding vulnerable ecosystems and communities.

The discussion also reflected wider concerns about how to reconcile climate action with the current economic challenges, highlighting the importance of aligning short-term responses with long-term sustainability goals.
