Welcome Karoline Ramin to the TIPMIP-ESM Domain

We are excited to “welcome” a familiar face to the TIPMIP-ESM Domain workforce: Karoline Ramin. Karoline studied Physics at the University of Potsdam and was one of the original members of the TIPMIP core team, having joined the project in 2023 as a student assistant. Her face is a familiar one, and those of you who’ve been following or participating in the project for many years may recognise her from previous TIPMIP events. She’s returning to join us as a PhD researcher within the project.

In 2025, Karo completed her Master’s thesis in paleoclimate, using the CLIMBER-X in RD1 at PIK. In that project, she investigated the late phases of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age during the middle and late Permian, simulating ice sheet growth with CLIMBER-X coupled to SICOPOLIS. In her PhD within the TIPMIP project, Karoline will focus on running Earth system simulations as part of the TIPMIP-ESM protocol experiments, with the goal of advancing our understanding of Earth system feedbacks.

Outside of research, Karoline can usually be found playing volleyball – indoors or on the beach – or trying her hand at a variety of creative hobbies, from painting to sewing to baking. As a child, she once dreamed of becoming a mermaid. While Germany may not be the best place to swim through coral reefs, she enjoys exploring them whenever she can on vacation – and is now pursuing a career that, hopefully, will help ensure future mermaids will still find healthy reefs in the years to come.
