TIPMIP-ESM performs and analyses the experiments with fully coupled Earth System Models in CO2-emission mode. The Climate Forcing Tier 1 experiments are described in detail in Jones et al. (2025). Due to the computational constraints, typical simulation timescales are on the order of centuries.

How to Participate in TIPMIP ESM Experiments

  1. Check model eligibility
     Ensure your model meets the conditions for this TIPMIP domain:
    • Check if your model has already participated in the table above.
    • It is a fully coupled model (otherwise see the other domain pages).
    • It has contributed to or is planned to contribute to CMIP. For more information on how this works, consult the CMIP participation guide for modelers.
    • EMICs are welcome but should indicate this when contacting us.
    • It can be run in emission-driven mode for Tier 1 experiments. (for concentration-driven models a protocol is planned but not finalized yet)
  2. Read the protocol

  3. Contact us
    Email data[at]tipmip.org if you are interested in participating with your model. Please indicate the information listed here.

Additionally, we expect all ESM experimental outputs to be published via the ESGF. If you lack the resources to do this locally, please also mention this and specify how much storage space you would need.

  1. Check list of requested variables
     Before running, review the variables list provided here to ensure you are able to provide most, if not all, of the required variables.
  2. Run the experiments
     Run in emission-driven mode and follow the run-naming conventions described in the Protocol paper (page 7).
  3. Optional extensions
     Optionally, run the Tier 1 experiment extensions listed in the protocol paper.
  4. CMORize your outputs
    All model outputs should be provided as CF-compliant netCDF files (i.e., “CMOR-ized”). The specific standards should correspond to those of the current phase of CMIP, currently CMIP6.
  5. Publication of experimental results on ESGF
    If publishing independently to ESGF, you can proceed as soon as you are ready. Otherwise, please contact TIPMIP-data to arrange the transfer of your data to DKRZ to facilitate forcing data decisions for the stand-alone models and early analysis for the upcoming multi-model analysis papers.

Please notify data[at]tipmip.org when your experiment status changes:

  • (a) Planned to run
  • (b) Running (with expected submission time)
  • (c) Completed runs but CMORization/upload pending
  • (d) CMORization done and data accessible
